Among stand heterogeneity is key for biodiversity in managed beech forests but does not question the value of unmanaged forests: Response to Bruun and Heilmann‐Clausen (2021)

چکیده
Schall et al. (2020) assessed how a combination of different forest management systems in managed landscapes dominated by European beech may affect the biodiversity (alpha, beta and gamma) 14 taxonomic groups. Current policy nature conservation often demand for combining uneven-aged unmanaged, set-aside conservation, forests order to promote biodiversity. In contrast this, found even-aged shelterwood forests, represented developmental phases, support highest regional (gamma) diversity. By pointing out that unmanaged included our study are not old-growth Bruun Heilmann-Clausen (2021) challenge conclusion as providing sound scientific advice societies. It is true studied representing defined literature. However, we demonstrate representativeness current Central Europe, where were more or less recently develop structures. We also show already differ distinctively their use this response stress role reserves promoting certain species groups, emphasise importance valuable research sites today future. Synthesis applications. see two main conclusions from study. First, still matter. agree with on general long-untouched do question conservation. complete complementarity only reveal after many decades natural development. Second, safeguarding largely should focus landscape matrix phases varying environmental conditions rather than maximising vertical structure within stands. Such can partly compensate structures missing vital, dense closed unsuitable occur due cyclic synchronisation forests.

Plant Biodiversity under Impact of Slope Position in Managed and Unmanaged Beech Forest of Asalem-Gilan
This study was carried out in managed and unmanaged Fagus orientalis L. (beech) stands in the Asalem beech forest in order to compare the composition and diversity of plant species. Three V-shaped catena landforms were selected for each stand. Then, large quadrats, 400 m2 area, with selective method and within each of them, small quadrats, 4 m2 area, were established along each catena and slope...
متن کاملBiodiversity differences between managed and unmanaged forests: meta-analysis of species richness in Europe.
Past and present pressures on forest resources have led to a drastic decrease in the surface area of unmanaged forests in Europe. Changes in forest structure, composition, and dynamics inevitably lead to changes in the biodiversity of forest-dwelling species. The possible biodiversity gains and losses due to forest management (i.e., anthropogenic pressures related to direct forest resource use)...
متن کاملDifferences in Genetic Structure among Fagus orientalis Lipsky (Oriental Beech) Populations under Different Management Conditions: Implications for in situ Gene Conservation
Resource sustainability requires a thorough understanding of the influence of forest management programs on the conservation of genetic diversity in tree populations. To observe how differences in forest management affect the genetic structure of Fagus orientalis Lipsky (oriental beech), we evaluated thirteen beech sites across Hyrcanian forests, based on six microsatellite loci. Significant di...
متن کاملRevaluing unmanaged forests for climate change mitigation
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Unmanaged or old-growth forests are of paramount importance for carbon sequestration and thus for the mitigation of climate change among further implications, e.g. biodiversity aspects. Still, the importance of those forests for climate change mitigation compared to managed forests is under controversial debate. We evaluate the adequacy of referring to CO2 flux measurem...
